Saint Jerome (c. 347 – 30 September 420) (formerly Saint Hierom) (Latin Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus; Greek Εὐσέβιος Σωφρόνιος Ἱερώνυμος) was an Illyrian Christian priest and apologist. He was the son of Eusebius, of the city of Stridon, which was on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia (and was overthrown by the Goths). He is best known for his new translation of the Bible into Latin, which has since come to be called the Vulgate and his list of writings are extensive.

Jerome Letters and Select Works eBook St Jerome

Such a surprise! This little book of letters Jerome penned is full of goodies. Just to think that letters back in 350 AD took weeks to deliver. It is however no surprise that St. Jerome was a Doctor of the Church. Such knowledge of the scriptures, which Jerome puts down spurious thoughts by other religions and at the same time letters to friends are so warm and heartfelt.

Jerome Letters and Select Works eBook St Jerome Reviews

This collection is missing so much. Specifically i had hoped to read his letters to and from Augustine, but found only brief summaries of those letters. If you want to become more familiar with Jerome as a person, this is a useful collection. If you seek specific letters, you may be disappointed.
editions are always a great value.
Jerome is not an easy read but I have learned alot. He was a big influence on Martin Luther and this book has helped me understand both men better.
Not quite what I wanted
St Jerome is a wonderful Saint to read. He live around the year 400 CE. (Christian Era). If you are interested in early History you are in for a wonderful treat. He describes the people and history of his times in very understandable language. He wrote in vulgar Latin. The cruelty of those times are horrible. He tells of the Emperor Valentian and Valens, his brother. Valens was beaten in battle with the Goths, and they took him captive and later killed him. There is one chapter in particular in this book , which describes the people and how they lived . Read it! I have not quite finished the book myself, so I must finish and get back to it, it's wonderful for me, as I love history and my faith in Jesus is complete. He tells of the various heresies of the times he live in, in particular Arianism. Arian was a Bishop , who got the idea that Jesus was a man , only. The heresy spread rapidly, but died out with the effluction of time. It reminds me of the Reformation and all the various creeds that started and are now worth zero.......well .........almost.
